How to Use Your SaunaSpace® Near Infrared Sauna

Near Infrared Lamp Saunas are used somewhat differently than far-infrared and wet saunas.

General Guidelines

  • Wait 1-2 hours after eating before use.
  • Stay hydrated, 8-16 oz. of room temperature spring or carbon-filtered water is ideal before & after.
  • If you feel sick, faint, or have any kind of significant distress during sauna therapy turn the sauna off and exit.
  • Limit initial sessions to 20-30 minute once a day. Duration can be increased over time up to 60 min not exceeding 2 hours per day.
  • If you feel sick, faint, or have any kind of significant distress during sauna therapy turn the sauna off and exit.
  • Supervision is a good idea especially when beginning a sauna therapy program. If you are alone, have someone check on you by phone.
  • First thing in the morning or last thing at night are the best times for sauna therapy
  • Be careful of jewelry which may become uncomfortably hot.

Preparation Before Use

  • Preheat your SaunaSpace® Sauna for 10-15 minutes by turning on the 3 or 4 Lamp Light Panel. The sauna will reach the 100°F required minimum air temperature for NIR lamp sauna therapy and you can start your session.
  • Bring a some of towels in with you, 1 to sit on, 1 for the floor & perhaps a hand towel to wipe sweat off the brow.

During Sauna Use

  • Start out facing the Light Panel, with the topmost lamp at chest height, keeping the front of the heat lamps 18-30 inches from your torso.
  • Rotate your body 1/4 turn every ~2-5 minutes and also if the side facing the lamps feels too hot. This allows deep penetration, sweating, and detoxification to reach maximum benefit in all areas of the torso.
  • Keep the temperature below 120°F by turning off the 4th lamp (if available) or opening the door flap.
  • Avoid working, studying, or talking. Detoxification requires a relaxed nervous system, so relax, listen to some relaxing music if necessary, meditate or use visualization techniques.
Sit comfortably but erect and avoid slouching or leaning.
  • Be aware of your breathing. Try deep breathing, and you will be impressed. An easy excellent technique is the ancient three part yoga breath. Count to 9 as you slowly inhale, 1st using your abdomen by pushing it outward, followed by expanding your mid-chest outward then your upper chest which will move upwards. Hold for a 3-count, then slowly exhale while counting to 9 again.
  • Turn off Light Panel after use.

Clean-Up & Cool Down After Use

  • Rinse the sweat off your skin under shower water to avoid re-absorption of excreted toxins.
  • If you prefer, scrubbing the skin during the shower rinse with a natural-bristle brush or loofah facilitates removal of toxins clinging to the dead skin cells on the skin’s surface and leaves the skin feeling refreshed and rejuvenated.
  • Relax. Allow the body to re-adjust to the world by resting for 10-15 minutes after the sauna session.

Healing Reactions

These are usually mild and temporary. Healing reactions are a feature of the deep healing that saunas provide and are a sign of healing. You may think of them as flare-ups occurring during the detoxification process. Symptoms may include any physical symptom as well as emotional reactions such as fear, anxiety, crying or moodiness. Common physical symptoms include odors, aches and pains,, muscle cramps, fatigue, diarrhea or constipation. If you have persistent or increasing symptoms see your health care provider. Usually, however, the symptoms will be self-limited and you will feel better afterwards.

Read, understand, and follow all cautions and warnings in the Operating Manual. Consult a health care provider knowledgeable in sauna use prior to installation and operation of a near infrared lamp sauna.
